In this post I summarize what each of the 48 laws represent. Each law should be taken as advice on how to use power and influence others, and how to protect yourself against those who would seek to undo your own success.
Law 1: Never Outshine the Master
Always make those above you feel comfortably superior. In your desire to please and impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents or you might accomplish the opposite—inspire fear and insecurity. Make your masters appear more brilliant than they are and you will attain the heights of power. When it comes time for rewards, do not compete for them. It is better to be the master’s loyal servant than his anxious rival.
Law 2: Never Put Too Much Trust In Friends, Learn How To Use Enemies
Be wary of friends—they will betray you more quickly, for they are easily aroused to envy. They also become spoiled and tyrannical. But hire a former enemy and he will be more loyal than a friend, because he has more to prove. In fact, you have more to fear from friends than from enemies. If you have no enemies, find a way to make them.
Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions
Keep people off-balance and in the dark by never revealing the purpose behind your actions. If they have no clue what you are up to, they cannot prepare a defense against you. Guide them far enough down the wrong path, envelop them in enough smoke, and by the time they realize your intentions, it will be too late.
Law 4: Always Say Less Than Necessary
When you are trying to impress people with words, the more you say, the more common you appear, and the less in control. Even if you are saying something banal, it will seem original if you make it vague, open-ended, and sphinxlike. Powerful people impress and intimidates by saying less. When talking ask yourself: “How can I be more mysterious and profound?”
Law 5: So Much Depends On Reputation—Guard It With Your Life
Reputation is the cornerstone of power. Through reputation alone you can intimidate and win; once it slips, however, you are vulnerable, and will be attacked on all sides. Make your reputation unassailable. Always be alert to potential attacks and thwart them before they start. Meanwhile, learn to destroy your enemies by opening holes in their own reputations. Then stand aside and let public opinion hang them.
Law 6 Create an Air of Mystery
People are drawn to mystery and intrigue. The more obscure your motives and intentions, the more fascinating you become. Create an air of mystery around yourself by keeping a low profile and revealing only what is necessary. Allow others to speculate and wonder about your true nature, but be sure to give them enough information to keep their interest piqued. The key is to be both alluring and inscrutable, keeping people guessing but never disappointing them with banal or predictable behavior.
Law 7: Get Others To Do The Work For You, But Always Take The Credit
Use the wisdom, knowledge, and legwork of other people to further your own cause. Not only will such assistance save you valuable time and energy, it will give you a godlike aura of efficiency and speed. In the end, however, always take the credit for yourself—it is the ultimate prize.

Law 8: Make Other People Come To You—Use Bait If Necessary
When you force the other person to act, you are in control. Make them come to you, make them eager and anxious to negotiate or discuss. Put yourself in the catbird’s seat by always having something they want. Lure them with fabulous deals that are too good to be true. Once they are in your grasp, then you can play hardball.
Law 9: Win Through Your Actions, Never Through Argument
Any fool can win an argument on paper, but it takes a man of strength and poise to win in the real world. In any dispute, simply lay out the facts—don’t argue or match wits—and see which position is stronger. Then take action and go with the winner. You will not only avoid wasting time and energy on senseless bickering, but you will also give your opponent less satisfaction than he had hoped for.
Law 10: Infection: Avoid The Unhappy And Unlucky
You can become a victim of the same ills that afflict them. Associate with the happy and fortunate instead. Life is an infectious disease, and if you hang around gloomy, depressed people all the time, their misery will rub off on you. You need to keep your spirits high if you want to succeed in life, so stay clear of anyone who brings you down.
Law 11: Learn to Keep People Dependent on You
To maintain your power, learn how to bring people around to your side and make them dependent on you. When people come to rely on you for emotional or material support, they become more pliable and willing to defer to your wishes. This dependency can also be used as leverage if they ever try to cross you.
Law 12: Use Selective Honesty and Generosity To Disarm Your Victim
One of the most cunning tactics is to use honesty and generosity to raise people’s estimation of you. Once they trust you, they lay themselves open to your manipulation, and even when they realize that you have taken advantage of them they will still find it hard to resist you. It has been said that it is better to be respected than loved, but being both is best of all.
Law 13: When Asking for Help, Appeal To People’s Self-Interest
If you need to turn to an ally for help, do not be afraid to give something in return. People are more willing to help you if they see what’s in it for them. So, offer your assistance and prove that their cooperation will be mutually beneficial. This is the only way to persuade others to lend a helping hand.
Law 14: Pose As A Friend, Work As A Spy
Infiltrate your target’s circle of friends and associates by posing as someone who shares his interests and ideals. Once you have gained his trust, you can discreetly gather information about him that will give you the upper hand in any situation. Be wary though; if discovered, you will lose all credibility.
Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally
If you have to give battle, do not be concerned about saving face—go for the throat. By totally annihilating your foes you will be sending a clear message that they should never cross you again. This ruthless tactic may seem cruel, but it is often necessary in order to preserve one’s power and authority.
Law 16: Use absence to increase respect and honor
Too much familiarity breeds contempt, so always keep people guessing by being slightly out of reach. This will give you an air of mystery that will make people more interested in you and they will start to miss your presence when you are not around. Even your enemies will begin to admire and grudgingly respect you.
Law 17: Keep others in suspended terror
Cultivate an air of unpredictability. Be completely honest at times, and utterly ruthless at others. Keep people off-balance by behaving erratically—sometimes harshly, sometimes generously—so that they never know what to expect from you. This will make them fear and respect your power all the more.
Law 18: Do Not Build Fortresses To Protect Yourself
Do not build physical or psychological barriers to insulate yourself from the world. This may make you feel safe and secure in the short-term, but it will only isolate you and cut off your access to valuable resources. Instead, cultivate relationships with powerful allies who can provide protection when needed.

Law 19: Know who you are dealing with—do not offend the wrong person
